I drive by the same river everyday – today, though, I realized it is not the same river. The trees and the rocks and the path cut by the river have not changed, yet the river itself – the thousands of gallons of flowing water – is not the same. New water molecules gave this river new life continuously throughout the day.
Sometimes each day seems just like the day before. Same circumstances, same people, maybe even some of the same conversations. Sometimes same hopes, yet more often than not same doubts and fears and anxieties about the future.
YET WE HAVE NOT SEEN THIS DAY BEFORE. There is opportunity for all of us to experience God’s presence and love today in new ways.
Another person pursuing God on her faith journey said it like this:
The Lord’s kindness never fails!
If God had not been merciful,
we would have been destroyed.
The Lord can always be trusted
to show mercy each morning.
Deep in my heart I say,
“The Lord is all I need;
I can depend on God!”
Lamentations ch 3 vv 22-24 Contemporary English Version (CEV)
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases
God’s mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in God.”
Lamentations ch 3 vv 22-24 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
The environment around the river may look the same, yet new life flows through the river everyday. Likewise, new life, new love, and new hope can flow through our lives today because of God’s grace and love.
In what way can “not seeing this day before” affect your perspective on situation in your life today?
A prayer based on the psalms from “A Guide to Prayer”:
O Lord, we will remember your great deeds all of our lives. Thank you for guiding those before us through wilderness and into life. May we have similar trust in your faithfulness, may we have similar experiences of your presence. Amen.
